Obituary

Sarah M. Gibbs, of Charleston, Arkansas, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2023 at Greenhurst Nursing Center, in Charleston. She was 91 years old. The youngest daughter of the late Clarence D. Sallee and Emma Gertrude Reed Sallee, Sarah was born in and spent the majority of her life in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

When she was 16 years old, Sarah caught the eye of a young World War II veteran while singing in the church choir. They married when she turned 18, and enjoyed over 70 years together before his passing in 2021.

For years, Sarah was an active member at Broadmoor Baptist Church and then Olive Branch Baptist Church.  She worked at the Pine Bluff Commercial for over 30 years, where her hard work propelled her to the role of secretary to several publishers.

After retiring, she and L. M. moved to Charleston, Arkansas where they enjoyed their Golden years watching geese and Fox news at the Skyler Estates.

She is preceded in death by her husband, L. M. Gibbs; her son, Clarence Dale Gibbs; her sister, Ruth Bernice Ray; and two brothers, C.D. Sallee Jr., and William Henry Sallee.

Sarah will forever be cherished by her surviving family members, including a nephew, the Rev. David B. Ray of Lakeland, Tennessee; nieces, Beth Thacker of Elkhart, Texas and Becky Bray of Crowley, Texas; and many other adopted nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who affectionately knew her as "Meme."

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, August 17th at Brotherton Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Charleston, with Rev. Dillon Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. There will be no graveside service.
