Robert Charles Smith, Jr., 61, of Charleston, Arkansas, passed away at home Sunday, December 23, 2018. "Rob" was born June 13, 1957 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, but was best known by most in this area for building and operating S-Bar-S Ranch & Arena on Hwy 252 in Charleston, where he spent his happiest days team roping, and sharing his great passion for horses & rodeo with many others.
He graduated from Southside High School in 1975, and went on to receive ASE Certification from Westark Community College in Automotive Mechanics. Earlier in life, he was also the owner/operator of Smith Automotive Service Center on Main Street in Van Buren, and then he had a successful career as a sales manager and finance director in the automotive industry. He Also received his CDL, and before retirement was honored to be asked by the Federal Bureau of Land Management to lead a 'special project' in the capture, gentling, and training of wild mustangs for the general public's adoption & rehoming.
In addition to his great love of all animals, Rob always took pleasure in helping others in their moments of need. From Catching cattle to car problems, or moving furniture to lawn mowers, he took great pleasure in being that 'first call guy' when someone was in need of help.
Rob very much loved his family and friends, but was most proud in sharing the accomplishments of his two children and only grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his late father, Robert Charles Smith, Sr.
He is survived by his two children, Tara Smith and Nicholas Smith; his mother, Shirlee Smith; his sister, Jamie Smith; two nieces, Kimberly Stanfill and Tory Kirchner; and one grandchild, Barrett Smith.
Per his request, he will be cremated and a brief memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 29th, at S-BAR-S Arena (access at 9112 Jetton Rd. Charleston, AR and please 'cowboy casual dress'), followed by a celebratory gathering for friends and family fellowship, and team roping in his honor at SS Arena (weather permitting free pratice roping and cookout at 2955 Rodeo Arena Road, Lavaca, Arkansas.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Brotherton Brothers Funeral Home in Charleston.
