Rex D. Gattis, who resided in Charleston, Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2015 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was born September 7, 1928 in Paris, Arkansas to the late Roy D. Gattis and Neva J. (Wackerly) Gattis. He was 86 years old. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Verma Dean Gattis; two daughters, Janet Meyer and Connie Poole; five sisters, Hilda Terry, Delores Grober, Elizabeth Foster, Irba Thompson, and Debra Gattis; six brothers, Mearl, Carlos, Norman, Donald, James and Michael Gattis.
Rex was a veteran of WWII with the U.S. Army. He worked for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office for many years as a corrections officer. He lived in Palm Beach County for several years and after retiring, he moved to Palm City, Florida. After his wife died, Rex moved to Charleston, Arkansas where he lived until his death.
Graveside service, with military honors, will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 30th, at Kersey Cemetery, located northeast of Branch, under the direction of Brotherton Brothers Funeral Home and Flower Shop in Charleston.
He is survived by two sons, Richard Gattis and wife Lynn of Wasilla, Alaska and Gary Gattis and wife Rhonda of Jupiter, Florida; seven sisters, Nina Harrison of Elon, North Carolina, Barbara Garroutte of Anaheim, California, Virginia Poe of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Judy Wewers, Carolyn Wewers, Brenda Ahne, and Tammy Drew, all of Scranton; five brothers, Harlan Gattis of Paris, Larry Gattis, John Gattis, William Gattis, all of Scranton and Ray Gattis of Wichita, Kansas; eleven grandchildren, Jason, Andy, Joanna, Kristin, Matthew, Kyle, Shawn, Ryan, Robin, Marshall, and Michael; four great-grandchildren, Joshua, Tyler, Amelia and Aven.
Viewing is set for Friday evening at Brotherton Brothers Funeral Home in Charleston.
