Quincy Dee Cantrell, age 83, passed away Sunday, May 26, 2024, at Greenhurst Nursing Center in Charleston. He was born on January 12, 1941, in Leach, Oklahoma, to the late Cecil Shady Cantrell and Hazel Ava Potter Cantrell. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Quincy graduated from Colcord Oklahoma Public School in 1959. After high school, he attended Oklahoma State University and graduated with honors in 1963 with a degree in Culinary Art. He volunteered for the U.S. Army Reserve at Fort Polk, Louisiana, where he was awarded a certificate in food service training. He was rated first cook in 1964.
Quincy went to Howard Johnson's from 1964-1971. He advanced rapidly, went to Tulsa as an assistant manager. Bill Barnett promoted Quincy. He worked directly for Howard Johnson Jr, the President of Howard Johnson Restaurant Association. In 1971, he moved to Caulksville, Arkansas, where he ran Quincy's Restaurant for 22 years before it changed to Shane's Restaurant in 1993.
During his time at Quincy's Restaurant, he invented his own onion ring recipe. Quincy was featured in an article in Farm and Ranch in 1988. He introduced Cains Coffee to the area. Quincy continued to catered and worked the concessions at Fort Smith Civic Center and Kay Rodgers Park. He catered many special events including Hiram Walker, Monster Truck Events, concerts, and the Old Fort Days Rodeo.
After 1993, Quincy continued to work in the restaurant industry until he retired in 2013. His hobbies were spending time with family and friends, cooking, watching old westerns including Gunsmoke, and riding his John Deere gator everywhere. He was an avid gun collector and had a love for hot black coffee, even during the summer.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 1st at Bell Cemetery in Watts, Oklahoma, with Mr. Dennis Woodruff officiating. All services are under the direction of Brotherton Brothers Funeral Home and Flower Shop in Charleston.
He is survived by his son, Shane Cantrell and wife Alanna of Caulksville, and his grandson, James Allen Cantrell.
Honorary pallbearers are Bryan Powell, Alan Powell, Rick Pendleton, Bill Randolph, Buddy Turk, and John Melton
The family will visit with friends on Friday, May 31st from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Charleston.
