Obituary

Paul Gideon McGuyer of Charleston, Arkansas, died Thursday, December 8, 2022, at Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was born on December 21, 1945, in Port Sulphur, Louisiana, to the late William N. McGuyer and Mildred (Curley) McGuyer. He was almost 77 years old. He was preceded in death by a sister, Robbie McGuyer and two brothers, James McGuyer and William McGuyer.

Paul grew up in Buras, Louisiana, at the very mouth of the Mississippi River.  He loved the river, the orange groves, and Fort Jackson.  He graduated from Hammond High School in 1964 and from Southeastern University in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in political science.  He did a tour with NOAA aboard the Oceanographer doing research in areas of the Caribbean, South America, Alaska, and Hawaii.  Later, he worked as a professional in the Boy Scouts of America and OK Foods.   Paul loved God, his church, his family, his friends, geology, history, the guitar, traveling, camping, hiking, hunting and photography.  He was generally happy and an entertainer by nature.  No one was a stranger to Paul.

Rosary service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, December 12th at Brotherton Funeral Home Chapel in Charleston, with Deacon Mark Verkamp officiating. The family will visit with friends following the rosary service.

Memorial mass service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 13th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Charleston, with Father Norman McFall officiating. Cremation and services are under the direction of Brotherton Brothers Funeral Home and Flower Shop in Charleston.

He is survived by his wife of almost 49 years, Barbara (Miesner) McGuyer; his children, Evan McGuyer and wife Jessica of Napoleonville, Louisiana, Eric McGuyer and wife Nadia Santos of Lima, Peru, and Bethany Williams and husband Michael of Charleston; seven grandchildren, Abbi Binz, Chloe McGuyer, Annabelle, Evan Louis, Rennalee, Ilah, and Hazel McGuyer; and one great-grandson, Sylvan Binz.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Charleston Knights of Columbus, Sacred Heart Church or Heart to Heart Pregnancy and Family Center.
