Mildred M. Pendergrass resided in Charleston, Arkansas, departed this life on Sunday, February 15, 2009, at the Greenhurst Nursing Center in Charleston. She was born January 4, 1917 in Charleston to the late Floyd Sturdy and Grace Bollinger Sturdy. She was 92 years old.
She is also preceded in death by her husband, Selby Pendergrass and her sister, Lucille Warnock.
She was a 1934 graduate of Charleston High School and was Homecoming Queen her senior year. She attended Arkansas State Teachers College, Arkansas Tech, and the University of Arkansas where she obtained her Masters Degree in Education. She had a long teaching career at Branch Elementary, County Line Elementary as a teacher and principal,and at Charleston High School as a teacher and ended her career as Librarian at Charleston High School.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Arkansas Retired Teachers and Franklin County Retired Teachers. Mildred loved books and was an avid reader. She also was a true supporter of the Charleston Tigers and Razorback football teams and the athletic programs.
She was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Charleston and served in many different capacities in the church.
Mildred was a Charter Member (1946) of the Branch Eastern Star Chapter # 541. She has served as Deputy Grand Lecturer for the district and various other offices in Eastern Star. She received her fifty year pin on September 16, 1996.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at the First United Mehtodist Church in Charleston, with the Rev. Mary Susan Hilliard officiating, with burial at the Lowes Creek Cemetery, north of Branch, under the direction of the Brotherton Brothers Funeral Home in Charleston.
She is survived by one son, John Frank Pendergrass & wife Kaye, of Charleston; one grandson, John Paul Pendergrass & wife Cissie, of Charleston; one great grandson, Eric Pendergrass & wife Meighan, of Fort Smith and one great granddaughter, Grace Pendergrass, of Fayetteville.
Pallbearers will be Fred Ernst, Bonner Weir, Paul Frank Whittington, Buddy Hug, Danny Council, Marvin Holland, Jr., and Carl Underwood.
Honorary Pallbearers will be fellow educators from Branch, County Line, and Charleston Schools.
Family will visit with friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday night at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund in Charleston.
