Mary Ellen Hammond, who resided in the Coles Chapel Community, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2016, at Greenhurst Nursing Center in Charleston. She was born September 10, 1922, in Logan County near Booneville, Arkansas, to the late Edward Knight and Ollie (Kerr) Knight. She was 93 years old. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Haroldine "H.H." or "Zeke" Hammond; one sister, three brothers and a half-brother.
Mary was a farmer and was an avid gardener. She was a former 4-H leader, church treasurer, and member of Coles Chapel United Methodist Church. Mary was a big supporter of the County Line Indians and County Line School District. She loved her community, her church, and living on the farm, and she loved her family very much.
Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 28th, at Coles Chapel United Methodist Church, located south of Branch on Hwy 41. Burial will be at Coles Chapel Cemetery, under the direction of Brotherton Brothers Funeral Home and Flower Shop in Charleston.
She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Mainer and husband Bill; her granddaughter, Leslie Dean Mainer; her grandson, Billy Ray Mainer and wife Carmen Rodriguez, all of Coles Chapel Community; three great-grandchildren, Brittany Brunson and husband Joe of Ratcliff, Lacey Mainer of Boone, North Carolina, and Zachary Mainer of Coles Chapel Community; several nieces and nephews; and her special dog whom she loved very much, Boomer.
Pallbearers will be Billy Ray Mainer, Leslie Dean Mainer, Joe and Brittany Brunson, Lacey Mainer, and Zachary Mainer.
Honorary pallbearers will be Todd Patterson, Jackie Dean Hewett, Larry Skeets, David Cole, Eddie Cole, Roger Hammond, Gene Carson, and Ron Rippy.
Family will visit with friends 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday night at the funeral home in Charleston.

The family would like to say a special "Thank You" to Sue Martindale and to Greenhurst Nursing Staff for the care given and kindness shown to Mary the last few years of her life.
