Herman Frank Verkamp of Charleston, Arkansas, passed away Friday, November 1, 2024, at his home. He was born on September 4, 1935, in Charleston to the late Jerry Frank Verkamp and Regina Philomena (Gramlich) Verkamp. He was 89 years old. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dolores (Muehlegg) Verkamp; and two sisters, Sister Irene Verkamp and Imogene Stec.
Herman was a 1953 graduate of Charleston High School and served in the Arkansas National Guard. He was a retired letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, Farm Bureau Insurance Board Member, former member of Charleston City Council, former president of Arkansas Rural Letter Carrier Association, former Election Commissioner, member of American Legion Post 8 and Knights of Columbus, and faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Charleston. Herman was a pillar of the Charleston community. He was devoted to his family and loved them all very much. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Rosary service will be held at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, November 3rd at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Charleston, with Deacon Mark Verkamp officiating.
Funeral mass service will be held at 9:00 a.m., Monday, November 4th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Charleston, with Father Norman McFall officiating. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Charleston, under the direction of Brotherton Brothers Funeral Home and Flower Shop in Charleston.
He is survived by his children, Tim Verkamp and wife Tammy, Kevin Verkamp and wife D'Ann, Mark Verkamp and wife Tracy, Brian Verkamp and wife Brandy, John Verkamp and wife Darla, and Michele Schmitz and husband James, all of Charleston; (26) grandchildren, Seth Verkamp (Ashley), Josh Verkamp (Jill), Stefanie Trosper (Reno), Calli Verkamp-Bocconcelli (Mike), Alyssa Raggio (Zach), Hannah Verkamp (Kyle), Jennifer Verkamp-Ruthven (Jeff), Bethany Verkamp, Emily Verkamp, Erica Verkamp, Jacob Verkamp (Moriah), Abigail Verkamp, Elizabeth Verkamp (Kenny), Isaac Verkamp (Khiley), Tarah Ketter (Colton), Stephanie Verkamp, Rachel Verkamp, Luke Verkamp (Autumn), Logan Verkamp (Brianna), Landon Verkamp, Matthew Schmitz (Jessica), Anna Beth Lowder (Cody), Alex Schmitz, Rebekah Lyle (Justin), Sarah Bartlett (Josh), and Jared Schmitz; (30) great-grandchildren, Claire, Addison, Brynnlee, Ian, Will, Eli, Noah, Daniel, Steven, Fletcher, Frances, Louis, Vance, Violet, Valen, Victor, Vincent, Casper, Callahan, Sophie, Josie, Isaiah, Kash, Ashton, Maggie, Everly, Olivia, Caleb, Adeline, Stanley, with two more on the way.
Pallbearers will be Herman's grandchildren.
