Hampy Eugene Nelms, who resided in Paris, Arkansas, went home Friday, July 15, 2022, at Baptist Health Hospital in Fort Smith. He was born a Choctaw on January 2, 1954, in Barnsdall, Oklahoma to the late Oscar Nelms and Hazel (Nichols) Nelms. He was 68 years old. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Frank Nelms, and a sister, Shirley and husband Bill Miles.
Gene was named for his late grandfather Hampy Nichols. He grew up on Route 66 between Oklahoma and California. He married in California, then joined the Army, where he gave his heart to God. Six of the ten years in the army he was stationed in Germany. He gave up his army career in order to have custody of his three boys. He was remarried and moved to Washington state for 20 plus years. He worked for Stemit, IFM and Watsons until he was injured. In 2005 he moved to stay in Arkansas. Gene was a man of his word, who loved God, country and family. His favorite bible verse was Psalm 118:24, "This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it."
He is survived by his wife of 42 blessed years, Judy (Bryan) Nelms; a brother, Dennis Nelms and wife Gail; a sister-in-law, Sarah Yaple; four sons, David E. Nelms, and Christopher L. Nelms and wife Christina; one daughter; thirteen grand-children; and two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
