Claire Elizabeth Moore, formerly of Fort Smith, who most recently lived in the Greenhurst Nursing Center in Charleston, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 in Charleston. She was with the caregivers at Greenhurst and dear friends, all of whom loved her, when she left this world. She was born August 5, 1915 in Crystal Springs, Pennsylvania to the late Theodore Fletcher and Francis (Crawford) Fletcher. She was 95 years old.
An optimistic and enthusiastic person by nature. Claire had a wonderfully interesting and vibrant life which spanned ten decades and included a variety of careers, and beloved friends. Claire was married and had two children. She was a butcher for Safeway Grocery Stores in the Washington, D.C. area at a time when women butchers were rare. She then moved to Fort Smith in the 1970's and began working for Drs. Davenport and Koenig in their medical lab, where she supported their practice for many years.
In 1985, she answered an ad in the Southwest Times Record that read: "World's Most Wonderful Baby Needs Equally Wonderful Babysitter." With that , Claire began a new chapter of life at the age of 70 and became the nanny to Lindsey Woods, and an invaluable member of Jan and Lindsey's family. "Grammy" as she was called, was known for her sunny disposition, her dependability, her excellent cooking, particularly crepes, and her devotion to making life really great for Lindsey and her friends. "It's a beautiful day today," she would say regardless of the weather. Even when Lindsey was old enough that she no longer needed a nanny, Grammy continued to support her activities. After Grammy retired, Lindsey, Jan and her husband Dr. Ray Burd, included Grammy in their family life, always inviting her to be part of the festival. It was a wonderful, mutually devoted partnership that lasted 25 years.
