Obituary

Betty Faye Burt of Fort Smith, Arkansas, died Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith. She was born on June 16, 1926, in Wilmington, North Carolina, to the late Albert Darrell Cox, Sr. and Mary Christine (Seitter) Cox. She was 97 years old. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, T.J. Burt; her son, Thomas Richard Burt; a brother, Albert Darrell Cox, Jr.; a sister, Mary Christine Joyner; and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Joe Dick and Elaine Burt.

Until Betty's retirement, she was the owner and operator of Burt's Steel Company in Charleston, Arkansas. In 2004, Betty was presented the Charleston Chamber of Commerce's Business Achievement Award for the company's achievements and contributions to the community's economy.

Betty was a former member of Charleston First Baptist Church and was an active long-time member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Fort Smith. She was a past officer of the Pilot Club of Fort Smith and was recognized as a 50 year member in 2014. Betty was also a member of the Eastern Star. A supporter of the University of Arkansas for many years, she served as a member of the Dean's Business Advisory Committee of the University of Arkansas College of Business Administration.

To meet and spend time with Betty was to love her. She was greatly admired for her faith, kindness, generosity, intelligence and strength. She will be greatly missed.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 9th at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Charleston, under the direction of Brotherton Brothers Funeral Home and Flower Shop in Charleston. Officiating the service will be Rev. Larry Horne.

She is survived by her niece, Susan Cox Miller and husband John of Punta Gorda, Florida; her nephews, James Darrell Cox and wife Lesa of Apex, North Carolina, Darrell Joyner and wife Joy of Greenville, South Carolina, and Edgar Joyner and wife Susan of Sumter, South Carolina, and Dr. Bill Burt and wife Teresa of Springdale, Arkansas; several great-nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Vicki Chamlee of Fort Smith.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Charleston Building Fund or the University of Arkansas Fort Smith Nursing School Scholarship Fund.
