Bennie Ray Wood of Caulksville, AR went to be with the Lord, November 1, 2019 at the age of 87. His parents were Lynn and Hazel Wood of the New Blaine Community where Bennie was born and grew up.
Bennie leaves behind his wife, Joyce of 61 years and four children: Karen Lowe and husband, Vernon of Lexington, South Carolina, June Walker and husband, John of Kingwood, Texas, Janice Griggs and husband, Keith of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Stephen Wood and wife Gelene of San Diego, California. He also leaves ten grandchildren: Katelyn Lowe, Brad Walker and wife, Sarah, Clint Lowe and wife, Jessie, Jennifer Walker, Nathan Lowe, Trevor Griggs, Courtney Griggs, Casey Griggs, Laura Walker and Alexandra Wood. He is blessed with two great grandchildren, Bruce and Holly Walker.
Surviving Bennie are two sisters: Georgia McReynolds of the Kansas City Missouri area and Ina Baskin of Atlanta, Georgia. Preceding him in death were his parents and two sisters, Loretta Jacobson and Ima Jacobson.
Bennie was a graduate of Paris High School and Arkansas A & M at Monticello, Arkansas with a degree in Forestry. While in Paris High, he played football, basketball and baseball and continued to love sports. Before college, he spent 4 years in the United States Air Force, serving 1 year in Korea. After graduating college, he worked for the U. S. Forest Service for 33 years. Most of his career was on the Ouachita National Forest in Arkansas and Oklahoma. Six plus years was spent on the Francis Marion National Forest in South Carolina. He retired in 1993 while in the Land Department of Supervisors Office in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Bennie was a devoted Christian, husband and father. He served as a deacon and elder for the Church of Christ in South Carolina and teacher and deacon in Hot Springs. Bennie loved the out of doors, hunting, yard work, gardening. He hunted deer with his friend, Robert Kissire for many years when he was able. He had the opportunity to raise cattle for 15 years after retiring. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends made through the years.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 5th, at Brotherton Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Paris, with his sons-in-law, John Walker and Keith Griggs, officiating the service. Burial, with military honors, will be held at Caulksville Cemetery, under the direction of Brotherton Brothers Funeral Home in Paris.
The family will visit with friends at 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at Brotherton Funeral Home Chapel in Paris.
